Children's School

There are far more people in Zambia who are unemployed than employed, leaving many people to wander the streets, searching for any window of opportunity to quell the groans coming from their empty stomachs. Such windows are few and often times open and close quickly or mislead with false hope and promise. The appeal of alcohol and drugs intensifies. Must it be like this? These circumstances are a direct result of the lack of education available to the people of Zambia – 20% of the population is illiterate, making it increasingly difficult to obtain any form of employment.

Education is particularly unavailable to those living outside the limits of townships and cities. There are no schools located in the immediate area around the Sons of Thunder farm. Many of the families that live in that area and on the farm have school-age children. A program was established by SOT to offer schooling for students. Word spread quickly and the school grew rapidly. We have 300 students enrolled presently with the possibility of 600 in the near future due to government relocation of several villages near to the farm.

The school is fully recognized and accredited by the Zambian government and they are supposed to pay the teachers. However, funds are typically unavailable and Sons of Thunder often supplements the salaries for these teachers and includes covering their costs of housing. Currently there are 5 teachers, each teaching 2 classes a day. The school houses grades 1 through 7, with an additional grade level being added each year. New housing and classrooms are presently being constructed, with the plan to further expand these facilities over the next several years.

God has blessed Sons of Thunder with the ability to supply housing for teachers and classrooms for students, as well as supplies for each individual student (paper, pencils, books, etc). The quality of education received by the Sons of Thunder program is regarded as exceptional. Students transferring from the Sons of Thunder school are placed at the top of their class in their new schools.
